Tensions continued to mount Saturday evening in the village of Abu Snan a mere day after 41 Israelis were hurt in heavy clashes between Druze and Muslims Arabs. Police forces have deployed to the area fearing another flare-up in riots sparked by a dispute between local students.

Residents said that in midweek two Muslim students entered the Abu Snan high school wearing kaffiyehs and were confronted by two Druze students who asked them to remove the scarves. "You have no right to wear that here," they were told.

The two groups of students at the high school clashed in the wake of the incident. The school day was suspended and those in charge dismissed the students early. The school council was scheduled to convene in an attempt to calm tensions, but the meeting was delayed due to the overnight clashes.

The argument did not end on school grounds and continued to spread across the community. On Friday local residents traded curses against Druze and Arab women on Secret, an anonymous messaging application. The dispute worsened following the virtual exchanges, developing into physical clashes during the night.

A Muslim resident arrived by vehicle to a gathering, where witnesses claimed he attempted to run over the Druze residents, who pulled him out of the car and severely beat him. A fragmentation grenade was thrown into the crowd, wounding dozens of residents. Eyewitnesses claimed a Druze man had thrown the grenade.

Why? I'm just curious here. It sounds like a lot of BAD behavior and intolerance from both sides going on.

....two Muslim students entered the Abu Snan high school wearing kaffiyehs and were confronted by two Druze students who asked them to remove the scarves...

Why are kaffiyeh's not allowed and why is it students intervening instead of teachers?

Sounds like back and forth fighting between the communities

So why exactly are your sympathies with your "Druze brothers"? Doesn't sound like ANYONE deserves sympathies here.

Police forces have deployed to the area fearing another flare-up in riots sparked by a dispute between local students.

And that is the truth of it. No one deserves sympathies.

They deserve all sympathy in the world, they are calm and trustworthy people, noble and brave, I met over two hundred Druze and this is my impression.

Coyote This is what they-Palestinians- call a Kaffiyeh.

Druze also wear a Kaffiye but never wear a 'Free Palestine/AlAqsa is ours' Kaffiye because that represent (anti-Israeli) betrayal views, which considered a huge insult to Druze - because of that the dangerous edge of tension is clear - the school decision not to allow any student to enter with a Kaffiye is far more reasonable and this is a tradition going on for years, the law is known to everyone, and some decide to ignore it - still, just to spark more riots and chaos.
Just to make everything clear - Kaffiye is nothing but a traditional head wear, nothing religious, the protest made is similar to wearing a political T-Shirt instead of the school uniforms.

One idiot to burn the entire forest.

Some Christian Druze do a lot of the Israeli dirty work, manning the tanks and killing Palestinians when ordered or even under their own initiative, which helps to "distance" Jewish Israelis from the crimes,

Its a tribalism which Israel encourages and uses to its advantage.

It is not only "bad behavior", per se.

The last "run over" car terrorist act in Jerusalem, killed an Israeli soldier, who also happened to be Druze.

The Druze people were not amused.

They see this as personal attack on them, not just the Jews.

So unlike the Jews, they don't sit back and whine, they declair openly whom they support.

So yeah, they totally get our sympathy!

Well, I think the Druze are Israel's ally only because it serves their purpose to do so. It is an enermy-of-my-enemy situation.

I think this overview is interesting to anyone not familiar with the background -

Druze groups
The small Druze sect, strategically and dangerously seated on the Chouf in central Lebanon, had no natural allies, and so were compelled to put much effort into building alliances. Under the leadership of the Jumblatt family, first Kamal Jumblatt (the LNM leader) and then his son Walid, the Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) (Arabic: الحزب التقدمي الاشتراكي, al-hizb al-taqadummi al-ishtiraki) served as an effective Druze militia, building excellent ties to the Soviet Union mainly, and with Syria upon the withdrawal of Israel to the south of the country. However, many Druze in Lebanon at the time were members of the non-religious party, the Syrian Social Nationalist Party. Under Kamal Jumblatt's leadership, the PSP was a major element in the Lebanese National Movement (LNM) which supported Lebanon's Arab identity and sympathized with the Palestinians. It built a powerful private army, which proved to be one of the strongest in the Lebanese Civil War of 1975 to 1990. It conquered much of Mount Lebanon and the Chouf District. Its main adversaries were the Maronite Christian Phalangist militia, and later the Lebanese Forces militia (which absorbed the Phalangists). The PSP suffered a major setback in 1977, when Kamal Jumblatt was assassinated. His son Walid succeeded him as leader of the party. From the Israeli withdrawal from the Chouf in 1983 to the end of the civil war, the PSP ran a highly effective civil administration, the Civil Administration of the Mountain, in the area under its control. Tolls levied at PSP militia checkpoints provided a major source of income for the administration.

The PSP played an important role in the so-called "Mountain War" under the lead of Walid Jumblatt: after the Israeli Army retreated from the Lebanese Mountain, important battles took place between the PSP and Maronite militias. PSP armed members were accused of several massacres that took place during that war.

The PSP is still an active political party in Lebanon. Its current leader is Walid Jumblatt. It is in practice led and supported mostly by followers of the Druze faith.

I don't think the Druze would be quite as pro-Israel should Israel ever set its sights on the Chouf.

There is no such thing as Christian Druze.
Druze is a religion and a race just like in Judaism but younger.

Daniyel -

I know a few Christian Druze from the lower Golan. They work on kibbutzim around Metullah and Qiryat Shemonah sometimes.

Christian Arabs - perhaps, Druze is a religion.
Both speak Arabic and they have share many physical features which means they almost look the same but there is no such thing as Christian Druze, its like saying Christian Muslim.

Funny man Teddy.

I agree I don't know EVERYTHING. And your logical fallacy is to imply I know nothing if I don't know something.
Do you see how that works?

If not, no worries. I am sure you wont lose any weight over it.

Nope.

They started it by running over that poor Druze officer dead.

So a few Muslims were slightly injured by a grenade. Most of them are out of danger anywahy.

Can't say that about the poor Druze who was murdered, now, can I?

My friend told me the Muslims got pissed because some Druze students was wearing star of David necklace.
Go figure.

Hhhhhmmmm...maybe not as clear cut a distinction as the brilliant Teddy assumes....

In Israel
Main article: Israeli Druze
The Druze form a religious minority in Israel of more than 100,000, mostly residing in the north of the country.[45] In 2004, there were 102,000 Druze living in the country.[46] In 2010, the population of Israeli Druze citizens grew to over 125,000.

In 1957, the Israeli government designated the Druze a distinct ethnic community at the request of its communal leaders. The Druze are Arabic-speaking citizens of Israel, who are drafted into mandatory service in the Israel Defense Forces, in which the same process goes for the majority of citizens in Israel. Members of the community have attained top positions in Israeli politics and public service.[47] The number of Druze parliament members usually exceeds their proportion in the Israeli population, integrated within several political parties.

So it becomes a bit of a question of interpretation as to whether a person from this ethnic community converts to Islam or Christianity - do they then cease to be Druze or not?
