When considering today’s Supreme Court, it’s obvious to even the most casual observer that something has gone wrong. A radical faction has taken control of the court, and has based their recent behavior not on the Constitution, adherence to precedent, and the good of the American people, but on the authoritarian goals of far right extremists whose goals are listed in a 900 page manifesto known as Project 2025.
This extreme document lays out the steps they are already taking to limit or eliminate long fought for and recognized safety and environmental protections for our workers and give industry the power to ignore the conditions of the middle class in a way that hasn’t been seen since the 1920s. Clean air and water are ignored in favor of profit and greed of the richest oligarchs and the rest of us will be reduced to choosing between an unsafe environment and no work at all.
In a nod to the extremists who claim Christianity, but thumb their noses at the basic teachings of Jesus, which are steeped in compassion, love, and the duty to help those suffering, the court has replaced over 50 years of precedent by refusing a 13 year old rape victim the right to an abortion. They have also forced adherence to their particular religious beliefs by ignoring precedent and instigating forced religious indoctrination in our schools.
Perhaps the most extreme recent act by those who have overthrown our once honorable court was to grant immunity to a known insurrectionist for any crimes he committed while president. No sitting president has ever had this ability. According to the wording of this recent ruling, A sitting president can publicly order a drone strike to take out his political opponent and receive no repercussions. That is not protecting our constitution. That is installing a king.
When graft and bribery were recently exposed for the most extreme faction of our court, one arrogant justice warned our president to be careful, in a manner reminiscent of a petty gangster threatening a shop owner in the gangster days of Chicago by saying “nice shop you got here. It would be a shame if something happened to it” The courts refuse to allow any more oversight of themselves than they want to allow for the president.
We desperately need to restore the integrity of our rogue court. Many think adding a few more seats to the court will dilute the extremists power, and give us time to institute a code of ethics like every other government institution has. Term limits would help too. Mitch McConnell already set the precedent for changing the number of sitting justices when he unilaterally reduced the number of judges from 9 to 8. We need to seriously consider adding a few more seats to the court to limit the damage wrought by the rogue faction that has taken control of our highest court.
