Have you seen the large number of videos where the cops pull over a driver and the driver just "happens" to not have his/her driver's license on their person? When driving a car you are "required" by "law" to have your driver's license on you, with you, or provide it within 24 hours. That is the law in every state. For those that don't drive, they are supposed to have a "state" ID. Nothing Fascist about it.
Any law enforcement personnel that pull you over or stop you, to question you is in fact, "detaining" you. Albeit temporarily.
If you have nothing to hide, you simply show them your license or passport or whatever form of ID you have and you are free to go. Every time I've been pulled over, I immediately have my driver's license and registration held outside the car window and let them take what action they need to. I don't lie and claim I wasn't speeding or making a wrong turn. If you have nothing to hide, you don't have to worry.
Oh, if you travel to Europe and they stop you for something, you have to provide YOUR RS! If you travel to Asia and they stop you, they will ask for YOUR PAPERS!
Everywhere you travel to in the world, if the authorities stop you, they ASK FOR YOUR PAPERS!

They were recounting a story where one of the Union officers asked a deposed, defeated, loser-boy confederate "general"--I think it was John Bel Hood--what in the hell were they thinking when they seceded knowing they were going to lose big. Hood said something to the effect, "You don't understand; we hate you."

It meant less then. It means even less today.
