In a Republic, actually
‘Donald Trump makes no secret of his admiration for strongmen like Hungary’s Viktor Orbán or El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele. Last month, he praised Orbán’s hardline stance on immigration and urged European leaders to show more “respect” for the president; earlier this year his administration struck a deal with Bukele to send more than 200 detained migrants to a notorious, maximum-security prison in El Salvador.

Many international organizations, experts and historians have sounded the alarm about the United States heading in a similar direction as these authoritarian regimes.

One year after Trump’s re-election, the Guardian asked activists and opposition leaders from Hungary, El Salvador and Turkey what their experiences have taught them about authoritarianism – and what they wish they’d understood sooner.

Americans “should look to other countries, especially in the global south for solutions and for what not to do,” said Ece Temelkuran, a Turkish writer and author of How to Lose a Country. “Drop the arrogance, drop the exceptionalism.”’

The United States isn’t heading in a similar direction, the United States has already arrived at authoritarianism.

As for ‘what not to do,’ don’t elect authoritarian thugs like Trump.

And we already know what we should have understood sooner: authoritarianism is the consequence of the fear, ignorance, and stupidity of the voters.

Trump is cutting the power of government with tax cuts spending cuts regulation cuts and thousands of government workers fired. Thats the opposite of an authoritarian. They increase the power of government

Democrats raise taxes increase regulations expand the government and insert it into every aspect of our personal lives. Democrats are now a socialist party. Thats authoritarian. You have it backwards. Thats a combination of indoctrination and stupidity

Both party's take a large step way to far,
Both the left and right want to tell us how to run our own personal life's
TWO SIDES of a bad coin.

We are living under the biggest expansion of the police state in history while government expands and spending rises, but you dumb ***** have your heads shoved too far up Donald's butthole to recognize what's happening.

“Be like everyone else”-Turkish douche, no thank you.

What expansion of the police state? What laws were passed into law?

The police state has been around since past 911 and you people either were asleep at the wheel or openly mocking us. You don’t like the fact that the government is now enforcing laws on immigration and sending your political future i.e. these imported welfare voters back to their shit whole countries.

One of the people they talked to is Claudia Ortiz. She opposes Bukele's gang crackdown.

That tells us she's either in bed with the gangs, or a ******* idiot.

Yes I remember that you all have supported expanding the police state since even before 9/11. Even now you imply the police state is not growing like a good bootlicker. Pathetic.

Ah deliberately misunderstanding what you are told, more proof liberalism is a mental disorder.

We have a police state, your mad you aren’t in charge of it and it’s being used against your future welfare, stay mad commie.

You present Trump liking Hungary's immigration policy as though that implies that Trump likes and is going his overall governing style or what have you.

You present it in the structure of a supporting argument, but your argument DOESN'T support your assertion.
