We are on day 37 of no paycheck for my husband. We've cut all our subscriptions and have a shopping ban to make it through the shutdown.

  • My husband and I are both military veterans, with over 50 years of service between us.
  • He has also been a government civil servant for a decade and is not getting paid during the shutdown.
  • We're not going to lose our home, but we've had to adjust our budget to help us weather the shutdown
Most of our family's income comes from federal funds.

My husband and I both have military retirement checks, and he's a federal civilian. Our retirement pensions are not affected by the government shutdown, but my husband's paycheck is. We're on day 37 without his income, and honestly, it's surreal.

While our retirements and my job will get us through, the loss of a paycheck has prompted some adjustments in our spending. I pared down our grocery spending earlier this year when DOGE and cutting government jobs were the hot items in the news.

Here's what else I've done to reduce spending and give us a bigger financial cushion, which helps keep my anxiety from totally taking over.

Double Dippers

Double dippers? What does that mean?
Retired .mil getting a fed job.....Most of the time through a fed contractor.

Same thing with regular retired .gov workers....After the wife retired from FEMA she was offered basically the same job by a .gov contractor with around a 33% pay increase. She declined.

.

And it's the local equivalent of my church that's feeding their kids.

Maybe she and her husband ought to stop complaining and look for a couple part time jobs to tide them over during the shutdown?

I’m pretty sure the husband was warned up front that shutdowns and furloughs were a possibility when he got the job

Why don't you have an emergency fund?
You know, 3+ months worth of your income saved up?
As dependents of the federal government, how are not aware that shutdowns are a very real possibility?
Why didn't you plan for this?

Your current hardships, such as they are, fall on you, and no one else.

Some people aren't happy unless they're complaining.

Something else to remember -- It takes between ten and 15 REMFs (rearechelonmotherfuckers) to keep one Combat Soldier going.

And that's the Army. The Marine Corps is supported by the entire US Navy and the Air Schwartz doesn't have any ground combat troops. Their biggest problem is when the PX Ice Cream Machine breaks down

The shutdown hasn't affected my family one iota. Of course we're not leeches depending on government

It's not much of a hardship. They still have three incomes, free medical care, cheap, tax-free shopping at the BX/PX/Commissary of any base nearby.

I don't either

A shopping ban?

Is that the same as going to the mall and buying a lot of useless crap that will eventually end up in the attic before it makes its final voyage to the curb?
