It was absolutely the Left, started in academia. Or at least took off there. We should not allow them to run from their own mess now.

All the above! It started during Vietnam when the war and the civil rights movement was politicized on the news every evening by Walter Cronkite and others. It died down afterwards and really cranked up when Obama usurped the oval office. That's when everything went south.
