Makes some compelling points.

Don't forget the so called split in the GOP that year. My guess is William Howard Taft was opposed to anything like the fed. On the Democrat side Woodrow Wilson was nominated on the 46th ballot. You needed 2/3 of the delegates to get the Dem nomination. The leading Democrat going into the convention was Speaker of the House Champ Clark. He voted against the fed in Congress and I believed he was opposed to US involvement in WWI.
