President Donald Trump on Friday said that a second American aircraft carrier will be "leaving very soon" to the Middle East to put pressure on Iran.

As he departed the White House for a trip to North Carolina, Trump told reporters that he's ordered the USS Gerald R. Ford to the Middle East in case "we don't make a deal" as negotiations between the U.S. and Iran continue over its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

Those talks are taking place amid Trump's threats to take military action against Iran isn't willing to make a deal.

When asked how confident he is that negotiations will go well, Trump showed confidence, but said that if they don't go well, Iran would face consequences.

“I think they'll be successful and if they're not, it's going to be a bad day for Iran. Very bad,” he said.

Darn, we don't have a ship named Mercury.

If so, it could be called the Ford-Lincoln-Mercury Task Group.

We did.

What I find funny is the media thinks because Trump ordered them there that the attack on Iran is imminent, even though it will be a long time before they get in position.

They had a deal and Trump scrapped it first time in office, i don't even know why the Iranians are talking to Trump they should just tell him to mind his own business and take that scrap metal home.

It depends on how fast they want to move. I served with a sailor who was on a carrier headed to the Persian Gulf war. I wish i remembered all the numbers he said, but he said that his carrier far exceeded its publicly stated max speed. If i remember correctly, he said it was an average speed of like 40 knotts per hour from the US to the Persian gulf. I think his ship was the USS Roosevelt.

I remember back in the late 70's our destroyer was tasked to make an emergency run to a merchantman with a medical issue on board and we were the closest. The speed indicator maxed out at 40 knots. They lit off all four of those gas turbines and within a couple of minutes that thing pegged and we were still accelerating. Those Spruances were the only things at the time that could keep up with the carriers when they got in a hurry.

Link? You are not referring to the JCPOA are you? Did you cry when Operation Midnight Hammer buried the Iranian centrifuges?

I spoke to my buddy last night who also served in the Navy the same time as me. I asked him if his ship (the USS Abraham Lincoln) had ever exceeded its supposed top speed.

When the Battle of Mogadishu was going down, they raced to get there. He said that he was watching the monitors that they have around the ship, and they maxed out at 60 knotts, but they kept excelerating even further, then the speed number dropped off the screen and it was replaced with just straight line symbols. In other words, they hid the real speed from the crew after they surpassed 60 knotts.

Morning shipmate. Digital readouts. Ours were analogue, either way they pegged the needle and kept going. All of those DDGs out there are built on Spruance hulls and run the same GE gas turbines. The Spruances were lighter because they weren’t as loaded down, if any still existed, yes, Paul Foster remains as a test platform, they’d likely win a speed contest but I think only marginally because over sixty years upgrades are bound to have been made. Oh, I think our published max was supposed to be 45. Scuttlebutt had us at 55 with a little bit left available.

Eta. According to the wiki article we maxed out at 32.5.
