US EPA Nails Fracker With Record Fine

The woes just keep piling up for Chesapeake Energy. The company is front and center in the nation’s natural gas fracking boom and it just got hit with one of the largest ever civil penalties for violating Section 404 of the Clean Water Act. The penalty was levied against its subsidiary, Chesapeake Appalachia LLC.

Wait, what? We thought the fracking industry was notoriously exempt from the Clean Water Act, thanks to a loophole engineered back in 2005 by former Vice President (and former Halliburton oil company executive) Dick Cheney.

So, how’d they do that?

Fracking And The Clean Water Act

Fracking is an unconventional gas and oil drilling method that involves pumping vast quantities of a chemical brine deep underground, to shake deposits loose from shale formations.

Though natural gas is billed as a clean alternative to coal and oil, fracking has been linked to a raft of local pollution issues, and emissions of methane (a powerful greenhouse gas) from drilling sites may be wiping out any advantage that natural gas has as a fuel.

The Clean Water loophole makes it almost impossible to gather direct evidence that traces fracking to a growing list of water contamination episodes, though the link between fracking waste disposal and earthquakes is becoming beyond dispute.

Under the Obama Administration, the EPA has been doggedly pursuing other avenues to bring fracking companies to account for environmental damage, and one of them is the Clean Water Act’s Section 404.

In announcing the action against Chesapeake last week, EPA described the alleged violations like this:

Regime Obama will not rest until America is once again beholden to his kissin' cousins in Saudi for energy.
they said they wanted to drive up our electricity bills, bankrupt coal plants, gave out billions to their pet green energy cornies and now going after oil..

what a government huh, when they intentionally set out to Hurt the citizens it took a oath to protect and serve

people better wake up and demand they rein in this AND other government Agencies

they shouldn't be allowed to make their own RULES outside of congress

The suit resulted from surface construction activities, not hydraulic fracturing.

Matthew lies yet again.

Yet, the American farmer for generations has continued to carve out woodlands, drain wetlands, and plow native prairie all the while indiscriminately applying herbicides pesticides and fertilizers that have found their way into our air water and land.

Agriculture is the one true raper of environments, and the government pays them to do it.

We need to CUT our co2 emissions....We need to cut so deeply that it allows for the developing world to start cutting theirs without risking our civilization to 5c warming.

America needs to cut its emissions in half the next 10 years.

We don't need to do that as Nuclear, hydro, geothermal, solar and wind gives us a way out.

Thank goodness that not a single fine was for polluting groundwater through fracking operations, sounds like the safety record of protecting freshwater aquifers marches on.

We've been cranking out CO2 like gangbusters for the past decade without getting a increase in temperature, how about you go back to the "silliest excuse I can find for fascism" handbook and start over.

Best quit while you're behind, Mattie.

You've already managed to lose any credibility you had left. With me, anyway.

American energy corporations try to increase American energy production and the radical left hates them and the Hussein administration punishes production. Meanwhile the radical left kisses the ass of every Mid-East (anti-American) oil producer. Is there a pattern to the warmer agenda?
