Jury trials for crimes that carry a likely sentence of less than three years will be scrapped, the justice secretary has announced.

The reforms to the justice system form part of the government's plan to tackle unprecedented delays in the court system.

Serious offences including murder, robbery and rape, will still go before a jury.

Crucially, volunteer community magistrates, who deal with the majority of all criminal cases, will take on even more work.

A previous version of the plan, leaked to the BBC and the Times last week, was to end jury trial for most crimes attracting sentences of up to five years.

But announcing the reforms in Parliament on Tuesday, David Lammy has retreated from the most radical proposals.

"Retreated from the most radical proposals"? ......What do they think three years is if not radical?

Thank goodness for America and our Constitution.

To our cousins across the pond, you truly are subjects. May your chains rest lightly upon you and whichever God you believe in have mercy upon you.

They voted to be subjects. That's their problem.

Jury trials are not effective in determining guilt. Too often there are juries that sympathize with the suspect. Mangione has a real chance of being found not guilty despite killing a man in cold blood. This is a sad commentary on our system of justice.

They are born subjects and act the part.....Voting did not have anything to do with it.

They voted in the Labour government last year and it's the Labour government doing this. The Tories are vehemently opposed to this.

I can't see it so i'll ask. How do you think having no jury will affect these trials?

I have served on a jury and it really opened my eyes. I prefer vigilante justice.

SO have I. Fleeing the Police charge speeding on his motorcycle. Guy had no shot. Why he didn't take a plea is beyond me.
