This will be another blow against Biden's re-election chances. He is trying to have it both ways, and it will hurt him with both sides.
The US has become more alarmed and robust in its criticism of Israel’s campaign as an offensive against Rafah looms. Biden remarked earlier this month that the IDF’s conduct has been “over the top,” and subsequently told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the military action in Rafah “should not proceed without a credible and executable plan for ensuring the safety of and support for the civilians,” according to a readout of a phone call between the two leaders.
Biden then told reporters at the White House on Friday that he had relayed to Netanyahu his position “that there has to be a temporary ceasefire” to secure the safe release of hostages still held by Hamas, a pointed use of a term his administration had previously resisted.
Human nature is to like the idea of a ceasefire. Who wants to see killings continue? No one but those who understand that Israel stoppping now would only invite future attacks, including Hamas grusome treatment of innocent civilians. But those horror stories from Oct 7th are old news, now either being ignored or falsely painted as fake news. Meanwhile on NPR, the daily, almost hourly "news" is the plight of the suffering Palestinians, with no mention of who brought that suffering on them, and how.
Anyway, this is a bad issue for Biden, because his base is so divided on it. The CNN story plays it as if the UN ambassador made the decision, but someone will remind us that Biden is in charge.
