What 8 wars is Trump talking about in texts with European leaders?
President Donald Trump's texts with Jonas Gahr Støre of Norway about Greenland were made public. He said he ended 8 wars. What is he referring to?
www.usatoday.com
1) Armenia and Azerbaijan
2) Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda
3) Iran and Israel
4) India and Pakistan
5) Cambodia and Thailand
6) Israel and Hamas
7) Ethiopia and Egypt
8) Serbia and Kosovo
Okay, let's look at this.
1) Trump's best chance of ending a war was Armenia v. Azerbaijan.
A conflict that has been happening since the end of the Soviet Union, Armenia did better before Azerbaijan got loads of oil money, and then started whooping Armenia's ass.
In 2024 Russian peacekeepers left because of the war in the Ukraine.
Peace talks began in 2023.
"Peace talks began after Azerbaijan retook Karabakh by force in September 2023, prompting almost all of the territory's 100,000 Armenians to flee to Armenia. Most now live in Armenia as refugees."
Armenia–Azerbaijan peace agreement - Wikipedia
"According to political analyst Thomas de Waal, the progress towards the agreement is largely attributed to Armenian prime minister Nikol Pashinyan, who has made a series of concessions in an effort to reach a deal. "
So, essentially Armenia was getting kicked, couldn't hope to win, so they had to stop the conflict. Armenia took those concessions and made it happen.
"De Waal also noted that Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev rarely emphasizes the benefits of peace, and continues to use the conflict with Armenia as a means to consolidate his leadership within the country"
Azerbaijan didn't care too much to have peace, and eternal peace is not there. It might flare up again.
Where does Trump fit into all of this?
Trump makes slip-up while touting peace deal between ‘Aberbaijan and Albania’
‘Er Albania, I mean [...],’ President Trump said, while referring to the decades-long conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan
"Trump touts his peace deal between ‘Aberbaijan and Albania’ – getting both countries’ names wrong"
Yep, Trump didn't even know the names of the countries, that's how much effort he put into this.
"Negotiations initially kicked off in March, when the two governments said they were prepared to end the nearly forty-year conflict. However, it wasn’t until the Trump administration hosted the leaders of the two nations at the White House on August 8 that they agreed to a peace deal."
So, essentially Trump jumped in and maybe he got them to sign a deal that might not have happened, but all Trump did was invite them to the White House. He had no real part in the negotiations.
2) The DRC v. Rwanda
This is the best of all.
The March 23rd Movement were a Congolese rebel group. Rwanda went into support M23.
A peace deal was signed by Rwanda and the DRC, but forgot to include the M23 group, who are still doing whatever it was they were doing before.
Oh, and Rwanda troops also didn't leave after the so called "peace treaty".
This is the worst "peace treaty" ever, as it did NOTHING. Didn't stop the war, didn't stop the fighting.
3) Iran v. Israel.
Well, Israel only ever intended to go in for a short time, then stopped. And then Trump jumped on board. Now Trump wants to fight Iran.
Iran–Israel war - Wikipedia
"Following reports – later denied by the IDF – that Israel was running low on defensive interceptors and resupply efforts were putting the US in a 'bind', at 6:02 p.m. EDT on 23 June, Trump declared on social media that Iran and Israel had agreed to a ceasefire that would take effect the next day, labeling the conflict as the "12 Day War"."
Literally Israel couldn't keep up the fighting. "Peace" was going to happen with or without a "peace deal" which Iran had no choice but to accept and Israel wanted just because it was running low on weapons.
4) India v. Pakistan
A conflict that has lasted for as long as both countries have existed. This conflict in 2025 was a "brief conflict"
2025 India–Pakistan conflict - Wikipedia
The ceasefire was called a "A fragile ceasefire". It was only ever a ceasefire, the "war" is not over. They just stopped.
Drone incursions at India border renew fears of conflict with Pakistan
Indian officials say drones returned after hovering in the country’s airspace for a few minutes
"Drone incursions at India border renew fears of conflict with Pakistan"
12th January there were more tensions. It's inevitable that they clash again. No war was stopped. Merely they stopped killing each other for a period of time.
5) Cambodia v. Thailand.
Second best of the lot.
Trump turned up at the peace treaty signing, made it all about him, two weeks later Cambodia and Thailand were at it again. They have since signed a peace treaty that did not involve Trump. This was on the 27th December, and has held for nearly a month now. Better than when Trump got involved.
6) Israel v. Hamas.
Israel was coming under increasing international pressure to end its conflict with Hamas. Hamas was probably feeling the impact of Iran suffering, less money for weaponry. Which you have to give credit to Trump for.
However, whether this ends up as some kind of peace in the region very much remains to be seen.
7) Ethiopia v. Egypt.
There was no war. There was no peace treaty.
"That includes Ethiopia and Egypt, where there has been neither a war nor a peace agreement between the countries," (from the source at the top of the page"
8) Serbia v. Kosovo
"The other conflict cited by the White House is between Serbia and Kosovo. In September 2020, Trump announced Serbia and Kosovo agreed to economic normalization. But Reuters reported the tense relations persist five years later." (from the source at the top of the page)
There's still plenty of issues between these two countries, one of which does not think the other should even exist.
North Kosovo crisis (2022–2026) - Wikipedia
Wikipedia still has lots of timeline after Trump "made some kind of peace deal".
So, for the most part, Trump either had nothing to do with these peace treaties, or they weren't peace treaties at all.
The best he's got is Azerbaijan and Armenia, neither of which he's ever heard of and the Israel and Hamas situation.
Some of the others are absolute jokes. He keeps saying "8 peace treaties" and he has no idea what's even going on with those conflicts right now.
