President Trump is able to play his opponents like no other politician I can remember. He deliberately makes statements that trigger them into demanding seemingly contradictory actions that he plans to do in the first place. This is the Briar Patch strategy, made famous by the Uncle Remus story about Brer Rabbit tricking the fox into throwing him into a briar patch by claiming he doesn't want to go there. The Epstein files are an example, where Trump implied that they were not going to be released them (in order to avoid the appearance of political motivation) but is now acceding to demands for their release. I hope the foxes keep falling for his tricks.

He is remaining popular with his base due to addressing illegal immigration and his tariffs on foreign nations which Americans feel are long overdue.

He has to be careful though as Establishment politicians will turn on him the first chance they get. He has to expand transparency and defend American civil liberties while confronting foreign "allies" who violate as well.

I doubt anybody would have trouble tricking the democrats. After all, we're talking about extremely low hanging fruit there. I don't consider Trump that high up either.

Tar baby. He ended up caught in the tar baby. He can't get out.
