Mr. Trump’s remarkable call for a political party to seize the mechanisms of voting follows a string of moves from his administration to try to exert more control over American elections, as he and his allies continue to make false claims about his 2020 defeat.
Last week, F.B.I. agents seized ballots and other voting records from the 2020 election from an election center in Fulton County, Ga., where his allies have for years pursued false claims of election fraud. The New York Times reported on Monday that Mr. Trump had spoken on the phone to the F.B.I. agents involved in the Fulton County raid, praising and thanking them.
The Justice Department, which has been newly politicized under Mr. Trump, is demanding that numerous states, including Minnesota, turn over their full voter rolls as the Trump administration tries to build a national voter file.
In March, Mr. Trump signed an executive order that tried to make significant changes to the electoral process, including requiring documentary proof of citizenship and demanding that all mail ballots be received by the time polls close on Election Day. But that effort has largely been rebuffed by courts.
On social media, Mr. Trump has pushed for even more drastic changes. In August, he wrote that he wanted to end the use of mail-in ballots and potentially the use of voting machines.
Taking control of state elections would essentially mean trying to advantage Repub candidates in any way possible. Doing what he has made false accusations about. Rigging the system.
It is without doubt the most grave threat to our democracy he poses.
What I was looking for was answers to the following questions:
We still have an election day on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November right?
The counties in the respective states (or parishes in Louisiana) still count the votes, right?
Winners are announed by the Secretary of State’s office, right?
I don’t know what is meant by “nationalizing”.... If you’re talking about standardized federal rules for elections that seems like something that could possibly be beneficial as long as it casts the net wide and allows for early voting, no excuse absentee voting, mail in balloting, etc... decided via national referendum.
I, for one, would like to see the Social Security card come with a photo and be our national lD card. As long as it’s free of charge and is good for an extended period of time (25 years or so), thats fine with me and you’d show it when you register to vote.
All of that being said, the blob’s administration is, easily, the most corrupt that anyone alive has seen on a day-to-day basis. Nixon was corrupt as hell in many matters but it was not exactly a daily re-enactment of the Gallagher family in
Shameless as the Trump administration has become. Clearly, they would not be talking about nationalization if it wasn’t some fairly transparent plot to gain an advantage.
In the sober light of day after the blob has oozed off the national stage, some standardization may worth looking into.
