Trump hit with criminal charges in New York, a first for a US ex-president -New York Times

Two pertinent points. Payments to a porn star are not illegal--especially when HE didn't do it and second, there is an inconvenient little thing called the "statute of limitations." You got him this time.

Payments to a porn star wouldn't be illegal. Claiming them as a legitimate legal expense and using them as a tax deduction would be.

It's a paywall

Former President Donald Trump has been indicted by a grand jury empaneled by the Manhattan District Attorney's office — the first time a former president has been criminally charged in the history of the United States.

The indictment is under seal, and the exact charges are unknown. However, they stem from a $130,000 illegal hush payment Trump is accused of facilitating through his former attorney and fixer, Michael Cohen, to adult film star Stormy Daniels, to cover up an affair the two of them had during the 2016 presidential election.

Cohen was sentenced to prison in that scheme over charges of bank fraud, tax evasion, and campaign finance violations, and since being released has given information to Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg in the case against his former boss.

The indictment of Trump comes after a long on-again, off-again investigation by New York prosecutors. Bragg originally declined to press charges against Trump as part of an investigation of his business practices, a move that generated controversy and led to criticism from former prosecutors in the office.

Ahead of the indictment, Trump called for his supporters to stage protests — which prompted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to step in and urge against violence.

Trump is widely expected to continue his campaign for president in 2024, regardless of the charges against him.

This is not the only criminal investigation of the former president. In Georgia, Fulton County DA Fani Willis is investigating him as part of her probe into efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election in Georgia — including the effort to seat fake Trump electors and the former president's phone call with Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger demanding he "find" extra votes to win the state for him.

Meanwhile, Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith is investigating Trump on two different fronts: his role in the incitement of the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, and his efforts to confiscate and improperly stash highly classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago country club in Palm Beach, Florida. Either of those could result in federal charges.

What "crime"? A supposed NDA payment to Stormy McFunbags that she has already denied?

How Big Brother of you comrade. The Party approves

I asked a simple question. If there is a crime here (and neither one of us knows for sure) but if there is, should the person get a free pass simply because they are a politician?

Over hush money charges.

Personally, I do not support this action. If Trump is going to be indicted, in my view, it should be for something more serious.
Moreover, the odds are great that it will be a hung jury, which will help Trump with his base. Though that would, no matter what, the key, politically speaking, is reaching the independents, and this charge won't cut it.

A Manhattan grand jury has voted to indict Donald Trump over his role in paying hush-money to a porn star on the eve of the 2016 election, kicking off a process in which the former president will likely be required to come to New York to face the charges, according to people familiar with the matter.

The grand jury returned the indictment of Mr. Trump after a vote on Thursday, the people said, marking the first time a former president has faced criminal charges. The indictment, sought by the office of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, isn’t public.

In New York, judges routinely keep charges under wraps until defendants make their initial appearance in court.
A spokesman for Mr. Trump and a spokeswoman for Mr. Bragg didn’t immediately comment.

I could have sworn I saw some people here spiking the football when it was announced the Grand Jury was taking a month off.

Oh well.
Are you not spiking it yourself?
It is just yet another example of the kind of ugly, immature and vengeful politics we have in America. You don't go after a former President with off the wall charges from years past.
Hillary Clinton, in the same state mind you, did a no contest deal for misusing campaign funds and it didn't even make on page 22 of the NYT.
This is a gotcha political game being played by a prosecutor doing it only to get attention. And, of course, do the bidding for the DNC.

The statute of limitations has run. Converting a misdemeanor to a felony is specious.

Of course, we have not seen the actual charges, but from all that we do know this incompetent Manhattan DA, who allows felons to walk and commit further crimes, has a real problem on several grounds.

But, they want that photo of Trump when he is officially charged.

It bumps up to a felony by Trump's continued attempts to hide it.

What "crime"? A supposed NDA payment to Stormy McFunbags that she has already denied?
It doesn't matter. They have documentation of the payment, corroborated by Daniels, Cohen and Pecker.

There was two years to bring that charge. Then the statute of limitations ran.

I have no idea what they have charged him with. Neither do you. I'm fairly sure cheating on your taxes has a longer than 2 year limitation though.
