The US has been involved off and on since 1974 when the communists overthrew the monarchy. When we pulled out of Afghanistan the first time we left a broken, lawless country. The Taliban came to the rescue at a terrible cost. The American public was very vocal about the horrific treatment of women, the rapes, carjackings, enforcement of Deobandi religious beliefs, the lack of education, the crackdown on kite flying etc.
