There is a hatred in America that still dares to speak its name — loudly, publicly, and without fear of consequence. It doesn’t hide behind euphemisms or coded language. It mocks, it smears and it flourishes in the open. That hatred is Islamophobia. Today, it remains one of the last socially and publicly acceptable forms of bigotry.

Muslims are a community that leading political figures can still slander on air, that journalists can frame as suspect by default, and that candidates can use as props in their culture-war campaigns without major consequences or jeopardizing their careers.

I'm going to be a bit unliberal here for a moment. Reagan was trying to save American lives, and perhaps exploit an opportunity th change the balance of power in the Middle East. I can't really fault him for the Iran part of Iran-Contra, because he had gotten hostages freed. (The terrorists just took more hostages because there were Americans stupid enough to keep living in Lebanon, for some reason.)

The Contra Part- Lawrence Walsh spent millions of dollars trying to pin that on Reagan, and all he was able to prove is that Poindexter and North took it upon themselves to do that without telling him.

At the end, Walsh was indicting Cap Weinberger (the only guy who had the good sense to say the whole thing was a bad idea) for not thinking his meeting notes were a diary.

I didn't.

Jimmy Carter dragged out the Iran Hostage crisis to get an advantage over Ted Kennedy, and then had no idea how to reel it back.

When people talked about the "October Surprise" back then, it was that Carter would secure the release of the hostages before the election and close the gap with Reagan.

Except... the Iranians didn't play along. After being attacked, sanctioned, and denied the opportunity to bring the Shah to Justice by his death, they simply had no interest in helping Jimmy Carter get elected.

Carter finally got an agreement with them to release the hostages, but as a final "**** You", the Iranians waited until Reagan was sworn in to release them.


Or there was a joke we used to tell at the time
