Haven't heard a word of such, if such were true, most likely he is acting on his own initiative, even as a mercenary... However, I would add this little caveat, the training that Azov battalion received was absolutely superb, they are waging asymmetrical warfare just as we would, absent of course the overt atrocities routinely lain at their feet!

Uh, no. Nobody resigns their commission temporarily, LTGs certainly do not do this shit. We send in CIA guys or maybe unaffiliated retired/separated guys sorta like private contractors. Mission Impossible: if caught or killed, the secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions. Off the books stuff, maybe.
