Another perspective:
When anabolic steroids were first introduced, they were acclaimed as a possible means for tremendous health benefits, when used in a controlled program along with a well-structured conditioning program. Even people who exercise casually could see significant benefits in muscle development, strength, endurance, and overall health using these miracle drugs. (Temporary benefits like this are possible legally today using Creatine).
But the Sports Industry (NFL, MLB, etc) complained that these drugs could alter the competitive balance of their sports and, in effect, render those who chose not to use steroids uncompetitive.
So to placate the couple dozen rich team owners in these sports, Congress chose to criminalize steroids, THUS TAKING AWAY THEIR MANY POSSIBLE BENEFITS FOR THE OTHER THREE HUNDRED MILLION AMERICANS who might have benefitted from using them.
Because anabolic steroids have been arbitrarily declared "illegal" for casual use, there has been minimal research on the benefits of these drugs, and the normal process of developing beneficial treatment protocols has been stopped in its tracks. But the fact is that anabolic steroids could benefit millions through doctor-supervised drug and exercise regimens, but we ARE DEPRIVED OF THIS GREAT OPPORTUNITY because of the microscopic and selfish interests of professional sports team owners, who don't want some chemical substance ******* up their competitive balance.
There is nothing inherently dangerous about anabolic steroids, and they should NEVER have been declared illegal. OBVIOUSLY, when they are mis-used by fanatical weight-lifters and other strength-athletes they can be harmful, but if Congress hadn't outlawed them, those people could simply go to a sports-medicine clinic and get a doctor-supervised program to achieve their goals, with minimal chance of medical harm.
DON'T blame this guy, and DON'T blame steroids; its the government's foolish decision to criminalize potentially beneficial pharmaceuticals that brought about this guy's unfortunate demise.
