This is often a question I wonder is it better to try to work while having a disability or go on disability income & insurance with the government ?

I have known several disabled people who have had to choose.

Example 1: Person A is diagnosed with Bipolar disorder, Depression, Anxiety, PTSD. Person A has been hospitalized multiple times for attempting to kill themselves. Person A can work a full time job if doesn't go on strong meds doctors prescribe for depression, but person A is extremely suicidal and feels like shit without meds and most likely will commit suicide without meds. Person A also is debating about intentionally disabling themselves by cutting off a limb or causing themselves to go blind or deaf thinking their life may be better that way. If person A goes on meds holding down a full time job is next to impossible to work the job due to side effects of the drugs: severe sleepiness, twitching/spasms of the hands causes person to easily drop things and have a hard time gripping things like a steering wheel on a car, blackouts, forgetfulness so severe to the point of amnesia.

Example 2: Person B has diabetes and a failed liver. Person needs dialysis to function. Person can try to work full time with dialysis, but most employers will not accommodate that persons needs. Person also is heavily obese, has breathing difficulties, is over 60, has bad knees & hips and it is very difficult to walk very far.

Thoughts? Should they work or do you think better off financially going on disability?

Work on disability, unless working makes the disability worse.
The only way you will get disability is by proving that your disability severely impacts your main source of income from your trade or occupation.

You may earn money from a new occupation that you can do. Some programs allow individuals to return to work while receiving disability benefits, such as the Ticket to Work program.

Gee. I wish my disability lawyer had told me stuff like that when I filed for mine.

Damn.

You can read it on the SSA website.
Yeah, but he didn't direct me to any pertinent resources; he did win my case, but that was something he failed me in, apparently. Oh well, that was ages ago.

IF they have worked in the past and paid into the system for 10 years, they can apply for SSDI (Social Security Disability Income). It can be a long process, depending on their disability. Many may be denied and have to reapply and possibly get an attorney. Once they are approved, there is a mandatory 5 month wait before benefits are issued. With the way SSA works, you are paid the month AFTER, so IOW, you don't get your first check until 6 months. SSDI is about half of full retirement

IF they have not worked 10 years paying into the system, there is SSI (Supplemental Security Income) and you have to qualify according to state rules and amounts vary by state. It is a federally funded program, same as TANF & Food Stamps, but states have their own criteria and amounts paid.

PS........if at all possible as costs are all over the place, it might be a good idea for them to find some type of work they can do. Either as their source of income, or in addition to SSDI or SSI. though there are limits of benefits vs earned income.

Person B should retire.

Person A should just check out.

Person B is already on disability. Person A is thinking about it. Person B would love to work, but disability interferes. Person A has had 20+ years of work experience, though at mainly low wage jobs.

Person A is in desperate need of help and should receive it cost free.
