You're confusing autarky isolationism with socialism. Socialist countries can indeed trade with other nations, purchase or/and trade, barter, raw materials, and other needed products. Countries like Russia, due to how rich they are in natural resources, can survive and even thrive without selling or purchasing anything abroad, but not all nations are in that fortunate position. There also has to be modern infrastructure in place for a nation to successfully become fully "self-sufficient" and closed without significantly falling behind technologically.
