Thought exercise: Merging Canada into the U.S.

Hell no… if that happened one of those NHL teams up north might have a chance to win a Stanley Cup again or the first time in 30+ years.,

Imagine that a U.S. President and the head MoFo in Canada (Prime Minister) got together over a beer and decided to explore the possibility of a merger of the two countries, creating the largest country in the world. In gross terms, each Province would be designated a U.S. State, with two Senators and an appropriate number of House Reps. Provincial governments would probably not have to be modified too much, except for name changes.

So the thought challenge is this: Name the things that your compatriots would demand in the new country. I presume that Canadians would demand their socialized medicine in its various versions.

We Americans would demand the retention of the Bill of Rights (First Ten Amendments of the U.S. Constitution). We would demand that the newly merged country adopt English as its sole official language. None of that French Quebec bullshit for us.

Taxes? That would require a lot of thought and there would have to be a merged system that would be different from what either country has now. I would suggest an overall principle that the aggregate of all income taxes (national, state, and local) could not exceed 50% of one's gross income.

Thoughts?
/—/ It was possible in the 18th century, but not now.

What for, really? The US is already deeply divided politically. I would even say 'fragmented'. Joining Canada would only add to this strife.

The electoral college would definitely turn bluer
If Canada joined, it would end Republican control of the House and Executive for Decades. Thats equivalent to adding a deep blue Texas and Louisiana. If Canada's provinces were added as states, they would lose the Senate as well.
