So....private insurance companies misjudged the number and type of customers they would have for the INDIVIDUAL health insurance market. They ignored the CBO projections for costs and expected premium prices and announced lower numbers. In reality, the CBO numbers were correct...and now the PRIVATE insurance companies are making the adjustment.
Nutbags...led by the person who knows the least about the ACA ( just check out his dopey comments from yesterday ) are running around trying to kill Hillary Clinton with this news. It will not work.
Why?
For the same reasons that the lies didn't work the first time.....and never worked enough to get the law repealed.
1) The ACA exchanges only impact people who didn't have insurance from another source.....like a job or medicare. These are people buying insurance on the INDIVIDUAL market. Most of these people get a subsidy to help them pay the premiums...and that subsidy will rise along with the premium increase.
2) The premiums for people on the INDIVIDUAL market were always high...and rose every year....so most people couldn't afford to buy a plan. And..when they did, there were lifetime caps, preexisting clauses and other bullshit that fucked the consumer. The ACA basically regulated these plans to make them a better deal and made them AFFORDABLE. They STILL are.
3) The ACA is much more than the exchange. It also regulated the plans that 80% of Americans have through their employers. It made all of these plans better and has managed to keep increases in premiums down to single digits. In addition...it expanded medicaid to lots of poor people in states with responsible governors...at no cost to those states. Foolish, politically motivated governors in 19 red states gave their constituents a huge fuck you ad didn't take the expansion.
Enjoy your day.
