Trump had the right and power to fire Vindman from his position at the White House. That didn't force Vindman to retire. Vindman RETIRED, he wasn't court-martialed and discharged.

Yes he did, the proper channel for his complaint would be to go to his boss, the National Security Advisor. If it was a military matter, it would be the inspector General. NOT an opposition politician and the media. Even if the president wasn’t involved, what Vindman did was career suicide. He would never get a responsible assignment or promotion ever again. The absolute best he could look forward to was manning a desk in the Pentagon processing meaningless paperwork with a heavy workload and no recognition. You never served, so you don’t understand the military culture. Trust is paramount, once a person violates it, he is a leper. Not only would he be a leper, but one without a security clearance which would make any meaningful assignment impossible.
Vindman wasn’t promoted. He retired as a lieutenant colonel. Tammy Duckworth was trying to blackmail the Army into promoting Vindman by promising to block the entire slate of one thousand officers if Vindman’s name wasn’t on the list. Apparently that was too much for even Vindman to stomach and he retired before the list came up for a vote.
