‘This is an emergency,’ Oregon’s U.S. attorney responds when sheriff warns Portland jails nearing capacity
Multnomah County’s jails are nearing capacity, which could lead to forced releases of prisoners just a week before potential presidential election unrest, the sheriff warned.
Multnomah County’s two jails are nearing capacity – possibly leading to forced releases just a week before potential presidential election unrest, the sheriff warned this week.
The downtown jail and Inverness Jail in Northeast Portland reached 90% capacity last Thursday, with 1,015 beds filled out of a total of 1,130 beds funded for the fiscal year.
On Sunday night, the population bumped up to 1,043 prisoners -- 92% capacity, sheriff’s officials told other public safety leaders at their regular Local Public Safety Coordinating Council meeting.
If the jails reach 95% capacity, a jail emergency triggers releases of prisoners, based on their risk assessment score, said Sheriff Nicole Morrisey O’Donnell.
The jail system hasn’t been at capacity since before the pandemic.
Oregon’s U.S. Attorney Natalie K. Wight pressed the county to explain how it will avoid what she called “an emergency, as far as I’m concerned,” especially given the possibility of protests and ensuing arrests during a volatile election season.
“We’re going to be way over 95% if something happens next week,” Wight said.
Jeez....Just house them in underused jurisdictions.....I can't believe all OR jails are stuffed with Antifa.
Even better, as done in Maricopa County, AZ, put up tents and house them outside in the yards.
