Should being on the dole mean that that government can tell you what groceries to buy? I think most of us would balk at the notion of the government telling poor people that they can't eat candy and drink soda. But, according to some, if they're getting any goodies from the government that sort of thing is fair game.

Yes, if we the American taxpayers are handing out money to universities, we have a right to withhold that money if they work against American citizens’ interests.
