Them! (1954) A Science Fiction "Bug" Movie That Still Holds-Up After 71 Years

Good story, decent acting, M1 Garands, Thompsons, flame throwers, Jeeps.....It's got it's all!

OK, so the ants have to be looked at sorta sideways but it's not CGI. ;)

Leonard Nimoy has a small, uncredited part as a U.S. Army staff sergeant in the communications room.

if I remember correctly, Clint Eastwood was the voice of the jet pilot.

A great B movie with a lot of heart.

The little girl at the beginning put on a top acting performance. Them is one of my favorite movies along with a few other from that period and type. Balck Scorpion. The tarantula and the one with Grass Hoppers.

Sandra Descher was born to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Descher on November 30, 1945 in Burbank, California. Ironically, she was discovered while on vacation with her family in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Her first jobs were in uncredited bit parts in 1952. In 1954 Sandy played the traumatized little girl in "Them!" which is the role for which she is best-remembered. At that time she signed a long-term contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Loretta Young was her idol, and in 1962 she was hired to co-star in "The New Loretta Young Show." In 1964 she appeared in "The New Phil Silvers Show", which only lasted eight episodes. By the time she was 17, she had made some 16 movies and 100 television shows. Descher attended North Hollywood High School.

In 1967, now known as Sandra, she left acting. Her parents owned Michaels, a chain of stores featuring Hawaiian fashion and style. In 1967, Descher left acting. She and her husband, Donald White, began to manage Michaels' Palm Springs, California location.

When I was still practicing engineering, my firm used a device called a nuclear density gauge to test soil compaction and moisture content. A picture of one is enclosed. Anyone who has been on a construction site has probably seen one. I used to train new operators, giving a nuclear safety class.
I would always give a dire warning during these classes, using this movie as a caution as to what terrible terrible things that could happen if the device was used on an anthill.

(Before someone asks, no, it is not true.)

Make me a Sergeant in charge of the booze

The sad part is that many of the 50s si-fi classics were filmed before or just after I was born ('55) so I didn't get to see them on the big screen.

I would have loved to have seen this one on the big screen.

They did a colorized version.
