The Trump Brain Drain Has Begun

Contempt for equality, inclusivity, humanitarian programs, public service, higher education, science, medicine, the free press, the arts, and the U.S. Constitution will now result in a reverse migration. Not as cataclysmic as nuclear physicists' stampeding to the U.S. to escape the rising fanaticism in Europe in the 1930s, but, quite likely, the imminent expatriation will be every bit as corrosive over the coming years.

America was great when it attracted the best and the brightest. Now, it repels them.

Some like it that way, of course.

A French university courting U.S.-based academics said it has already received nearly 300 applications for researchers seeking "refugee status" amid President Trump's elimination of funding for several scientific programs.
Last month, Aix-Marseille University, one of the country's oldest and largest universities, announced it was accepting applications for its Safe Place For Science program, which it said offers "a safe and stimulating environment for scientists wishing to pursue their research in complete freedom."
This week, Aix-Marseille said it had received 298 applications, and 242 of them are eligible and currently up for review. Of the eligible applicants, 135 are American...

And, of course, the U.S. is becoming a place that the best and brightest from elsewhere will no longer want to contribute to.

Is the self-inflicted, inbred decline inexorable?

Glorius, isn't it? Trump is making life worth living again.

Seems to me the genesis of this whole weird anti-science thing was the early days of the climate change debate.

They're willing to throw the baby out with the bathwater, 'cuz it keeps stuff simple 'n stuff.
The defiant "We can poop into the heavens with impunity!" arrogance exposes a driving hubris.

Well, an advanced education is a product of Satan, so the flock is most likely fine with this.

We don't need educated people here.
The problem used to be Repub voters felt more comfortable supporting someone they wanted to have a beer with, not a Rhodes scholar. These days they're more comfortable supporting the guy who reminds them of their fat, ignorant, ex-con, bigoted uncle who was the life of the party but stole the silverware after he groped most of the women.

I prefer not to think too much about what it says about those voters. It's too depressing.

The best-educated states overwhelmingly casting their electoral votes against Trump and the least-educated overwhelmingly for him is indicative of the intellectual disparity.

It took me several years to work my way through the 2016 elections. I had a thousand conversations with them (many with clients) and asked a zillion questions, and I understand it somewhat better.

But at some point I had to admit that the country simply isn't what I thought we were, and that actually cleared things up and made it make sense. Not exactly a pleasant thought, but I'm over it now.

"As the Trump administration slashes support to research institutions and threatens to freeze federal funding to universities like Harvard and Columbia, European leaders are offering financial help to U.S.-based researchers and hoping to benefit from what they are calling a “gigantic miscalculation.”

“Nobody could imagine a few years ago that one of the great democracies of the world would eliminate research programs on the pretext that the word ‘diversity’ appeared in its program,” President Emmanuel Macron of France said on Monday."

So says the NYTs today.

Yes folks this is Trump's economic plan. Bulldoze our economy into the ground and have the best and brightest flee this country for the first time in its history. It is something only MAGA monkeys would be proud of.

Assuming that ^ recitation is true from first letter to very final “period:”

Isn’t it interesting that, after assessing all that raw date, you came to the wrong conclusion?

I think that’s interesting.

PARIS (AP) — The European Union launched a drive today to attract scientists and researchers to Europe with offers of grants and new policy plans, after the Trump administration froze U.S. government funding linked to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

“A few years ago, no one would have imagined that one of the biggest democracies in the world would cancel research programs under the pretext that the word diversity was in this program,” French President Macron said at the “Choose Europe for Science” event in Paris.

Do you hear that sucking sound Ross Perot? That's the sound of smart people leaving the USA

Not going to happen. Not in any significant numbers.

This is happening throughout the autocratic world, as authoritarian leaders crack down on institutions of higher learning. This has already happened in Russia and Hungary. The populations of both countries are declining, as they refuse continue to brutally punish dissent or even criticism.

The ones who are leaving, are the best and the brightest because they have the most options available to them. The ones who are left behind, are the oldest, the least educated, and the least able to thrive elsewhere. The population of both Russia and Hungary is aging, and less productive that in the past. Putin's war with the Ukraine has accelerated the process of military age, well educated men, fleeing military service. Like the Viet Nam draft dodgers who came to Canada and never left.

Now Canada is seeing an influx of physicians from the USA, who are fed up with being targeted by rabid anti-abortionists, and unable to properly care for patients in distress because of a patchwork of differing laws and prohibitions across every state. They tired of seeing patients suffer because of laws which ignore women's reproductive biology in an all out effort to force women to have more babies.

The best and the brightest will be scooped up faster than we can say "Here's your "Landed Immigrant Status Card", your Social Insurance Number, and your OHIP (Medical benefits) Card. Let us introduce you to head of [your professional association], who will see to it that your credentials and licenses are issued promptly. Here's a list of resettlement resources and programs. Welcome to Canada".

After years of watching the doctors and nurses Canadian taxpayers paid to educate and train, being scooped up by American hospitals and clinics, while we continue to suffer under a severe shortage of PCP's, all I can say is "Welcome to Canada".

The difference between liberals and conservatives is that liberals are never certain that they're right, and conservatives are absolutely convinced that they're never wrong.

Thank you for proving that statement.

Higher education, science, medicine, etc.

The result, if not the intent, is to reduce the nation's talent pool.

You got it ass backwards, of course.

Liberals generally engage in the muddled “thinking” which you just stupidly verbalized.

Thanks for proving that point.

I heard another depressing thing about the deplorables today. A recent poll indicated about half of those polled said they were in favor of the unconstitutional deportation of alleged gang members without due process. There is no excuse for that despite the hyperbolic demonization of the targets for deportation. We either stand for the rule of law or we don't.
