The Trump administration’s attack on Venezuela is not about stopping drugs. That claim collapses under basic scrutiny. The real issue is Venezuela’s vast mineral and energy wealth.
While drugs do move through Caribbean and Central American routes, U.S. Department of Justice and DEA data show that Venezuela is not a major supplier of drugs to the United States. Roughly 90 percent of drugs shipped from Venezuela go to Europe, not North America. The largest source of illegal drugs entering the U.S. is Mexico, followed by Colombia and other nations. Venezuela doesn’t even make the list.
Yet the administration claims it destroyed 36 “drug boats” linked to Venezuela, without presenting evidence that any were carrying narcotics. By completely destroying the vessels and killing 115 people, the administration conveniently eliminated any chance for independent verification. Allegations without evidence are not proof.
