The Special Operations Executive (SOE) were the pride and joy of the British, perhaps the best in the world.

They also assisted the U.S in creating the OSS (and eventually the CIA) which were comparable in their manner though the British were still an empire and heavily motivated to hire the best of the best as life and death were literally at stake; and they did hire the best. They were also extremely successful in recruiting foreign agents and counter agents from the Germans. Some of their successes were fantastic, they weren't rigid nor played politics, it was entirely about winning for the empire.

Long dissolved, does the current British intelligence such as the SIS/Mi6 and their DI measure up? If someone can direct me to a good book I'd be interested.

Yeah, they still have those, now they work for Iran.....

"The Baker Street Irregulars"? Not military though. More like Wild Bill Donovan's OSS only smarter and better at espionage and counter espionage.
