As I may have mentioned before, I am the faculty advisor for a couple of student clubs at the high school where I teach. One of those is the Asian American Student Club (no I'm not Asian, but every club has to have a faculty advisor). Every year for the past few years, the Asian student clubs at several high schools in the city get together to plan and prepare for an "Asian Night" where student groups play music, dance, and prepare foods from their family heritage countries/cultures. The other day the students held just such an event again. They really did great! The turnout was impressive. Of course family and friends came to cheer on their peeps, but a lot of other teachers and administrators showed up as well. A rather large auditorium was pretty well full.

The kids permormed impressively and had a lot of fun. The few times there were minor technical difficulties with lighting or sound, the "DJs" worked the stage telling terrible jokes that the crowd participated in. There was even a tug of war! After the performances, the members of the clubs served foods representative of their family heritages to the guests. The line to get some grub was enormous, so after going back stage to congratulate the kids I made my Irish exit to get home at a reasonable hour.

I was proud of and happy for the kids. We'll no doubt discuss it at the next club meeting.
