This war started after the conclusion of the First Punic War in 241 BC. It is referred to as the "truceless war" because of how it ended.
The war was between a group of mercenaries who fought for Carthage in their first war with the nascent Roman Empire. When Carthage was supposed to pay them for their services they failed to deliver on some of what was promised and the mercenaries revolted against Carthage. It was the father of Hannibal Barca, Hamilcar, who eventually took over the leadership for Carthage in their fight against them. Under his command he started winning and those he captured he showed leniency to.
The rebel commander, Spendius, was afraid of this leniency causing his troops to surrender so he had 700 prisoners tortured to death, knowing it would prevent the end to this leniency. Talk about a strategic bunder, it ended up causing something way, way past the level of Stalingrad for the starving and surrounded rebels, and it ended in the Battle of the Saw. The canyon they were holed up in is depicted below.
