Elon Musk was spot on about the House Republican Reconciliation bill that is was a disgusting abomination and he should know he did numerous historic disgusting abomination acts as head of DOGE over the past four months! The Republicans are making multiple mistakes with their current reconciliation bill agenda the biggest being that they describe the situation as Washington must pass this monstrosity of a bill or the American people's taxes will go up four trillion dollars next year; the American people aren't stupid they know Washington could pass a narrow version of the current bill and their taxes wouldn't go up. The Congress and the President could extend all the 2017 individual tax rates and the accompanying modifications to the tax code like eliminate the personal exemption but increase the standard deduction and even increase the SALT deduction to the House compromise level of $40,000 per year and considering the savings from not extending the other 2017 tax breaks for the wealthy and centrist supportable tax cuts in the House bill Washington could enact a good extension law.
Another mistake Republicans are making with this bill and a large part of their agenda today is they say to solve the nation's debt problems we have to grow the economy and in order to do that we have to lower certain taxes which end up being taxes for the wealthy and corporations. The America people can see this for what it is which is a bunch of garbage, it is an abuse of government; it is like the garbage economic policy agenda that Republicans peddled for decades before this one that the country has to do trickle down economics that being if we give big tax breaks to the wealthy and big business the increased monies these entities get will flow down into the pockets of ordinary people and as we all learned not enough was trickling down there was a dam in wealthy people and corporations pockets and the increased money was staying with them.
Majority leader Senator John Thune who I have to give him his due he is not a right wing extremist said something which underlies a central plank of the problem here for Republicans he said Republican rank and file in the last election ran on extending the 2017 tax cuts and the other tax cuts the President campaigned on, the second part is not accurate! Rank and File Republicans did not run on "no tax on tips" and "no tax on overtime" and "no tax for social security pension benefits for the wealthy -or the overkill version of this of increasing the standard deduction for seniors" and a "fifteen percent corporate tax rate for corporations that manufacture in the United States" and why didn't they because it is incredibly irresponsible and atrociously bad public policy. The Republicans have to say to the President that the vast majority of Americans don't expect President Trump to implement those campaign planks into law they understand that he was campaigning for votes; if the Republicans just drop the obvious bad policy in the bill a good bill begins to appear that they can pass with majority support of the American People!
Washington has a long history of when Congressional Leadership is not offering a viable and good bill on an issue a group of good non-extremist members of Congress getting together and negotiating a good bill. Seeing the cast of characters in the White House and in the leadership of both chambers of Congress one can see the following scenario unfold where all these leaders play games with the bill for the next three months where they don't fundamentally change the bill and come the end of September when the nation is facing a default on the nation's national debt they pressure rank and file Republicans to pass this extremely bad one big "B" bill to avoid a collapse of the financial markets. If the nation of America is to be spared this catastrophic One Big "B" bill from being enacted into law come the middle of July when it is clear the leaders don't have a passable bill a group of virtuous rank and file Republican members of Congress are going to have to begin to negotiate a "Plan 'B'" bill, a narrow basic bill as described above, that will give the Republican conferences in the House and the Senate a "good" option to get out of this manufactured crisis!
