Where capitalism works, it works really well ... of all the restaurants in town, the one with the best food and the cheapest price will always do better than the restaurant with crappy food and high prices ... but this doesn't stop dirty restaurants, ones that make unsuspecting people sick or dead ... thus We the People establish laws and regulations that require restaurants to be operated in clean fashion ... a minimum "floor" that all restaurants must comply with, so none of us have to pick through our food pulling out hair and rat turds ... it is above this regulatory floor that restaurants compete for business ...

Where capitalism doesn't work, things get ugly fast ... imagine eight sets of utility poles in your neighborhood, with eight sets of electric wires and eight drops to your home ... what a fucking mess ... add twelve telephone companies and forty-two cable companies ... we'd have a solid canopy of wires everyplace ... the problems of a competitive market in retail electricity distribution so greatly outweigh the cost advantages as to make such completely unreasonable ... so we have a level of socialism, the government tells you which electric company to buy your electricity from, and we have absolutely no choice ... in return one set of poles, one set of electric wires, one drop at our homes ... we can still see the sky this way ...

In between we have something like Social Security ... all of us must pay in, and most all of us will be able to draw our pension back out in due season ... however, all of us can pay in more to a private pension fund if we wish to live a better lifestyle in our retirement ... because the government mandated "you must pay in" pension is shit, just keeps you from being homeless and not much more ... if you want better, you'll have to go to the free market ... and free market pension plans are allowed in addition to Social Security ... with this allowance of private pension plans, we are not in a pure socialism, it's a socialized system ... in part government owned, in part privately owned ...

I believe we should always start with the free market ... if there's problems created by the free market, then introduce regulations that solve these problems (like making food service workers wear hair nets or keeping restaurants rat free) ... and we have to accept that in a few markets even this won't work, we're better off letting the government own the retail markets and control it as we see fit ... socialism as a last resort, it's the best way to keep the lights on at our homes ...

I know ... it's a shame we spent all that money to provide used motor oil disposal site at every street corner ... now the damn government tells us we can't use them because of some STUPID fish ... outrageous I say ...
