Sorry to have to throw the brakes on the runaway train of heady optimism regarding the "Arab Spring", but did anyone really believe that Arab-moslems would embrace democracy, plurality, individual rights?

Tunis – Tunisia inaugurated its era of suicide bombings on Wednesday, October 30, when a 21-year-old man blew himself up in the tourist town of Sousse, located south of the capital Tunis. Meanwhile, security forces were foiling an attempt to blow up former president Habib Bourguiba's mausoleum in the adjacent city of Mustanir.

The article goes on to describe Ansar al-sharia as the local affiliate of Jihad Intl. Inc. which coordinated the mass murder attempt.

History has proven there is much truth in what you say. I know of no better example than Iran. From the glory & grandeur of Persepolis under Zoroastrian rule to the slums of Shiraz under Muslim rule.

An issue mostly ignored by the media has been the proximate cause of the “Arab Spring”. In most reports, the repressiveness of the regimes has been highlighted. That’s all very true, but these regimes have been repressive for all of modern memory and have survived minor protesting before. The difference between previous protests organized by pro-democracy movements and the advent of the Arab spring was such that the uprising early on in Tunisia was largely about food. This is not a matter of the price of bread going up at the supermarket; this only happens when people are starving. North Africa and the Middle East have seen these riots before, and this will not be the first time governments have been toppled by people looking for a meal.

I suspect Tunisia will go the way of every other islamist backwater in the Middle East and Northe Africa.

besides the widespread semi-famine----which has actually been going
on for years------there is an issue of RELIGION -----a kind of "BACK TO
THE OLD TIME RELIGION" thing that afflicts the ummah periodically----
such "back to the old time religion" waves are always bloody and always
involve attacks on non muslims-----of course such waves often happen
on the heels of other "natural disasters"
