I've had students who came here and applied for asylum because:

• he left Iran on a school trip to Greece where he converted to Greek Orthodox. If he had gone home, he would have been beheaded right there on the tarmac at the airport.
• his family owned a successful farm in Mexico and he had already been kidnapped twice. His family was sure they could not pay the increasing ransom.
• his entire village in El Salvador was slaughtered by narco-terrorists, and he was sure he would be next.
• as she ran for her life out of Rwanda, every member of her family fell one by one until she was the last one remaining
• three generations of his family were run out of Somalia
• he walked for three weeks out of Tibet into India and eventually made it to America
