The Grass Roots

Another of those record company invented bands, only they managed to actually produce some good songs. I liked several of them. Also liked a few of the Monkees and Mamas and Papas songs, also record company created bands. Many of the producers were more talented than the musicians.

Who really cares if any of those bands wrote their own material. I like the final production and most of these bands had a strong following.

Glen Campbell was hired to to be a Beach Boy on one of their tour bands. The point being rock n roll was a lot more commercial than 'rebellion' fans like to admit, and 'commercial' bands weren't always awful or bad musically. Some of the producers had a lot of talent themselves even if the musicians didn't.

There is a book out that covers the 'Wrecking Crew', people hired to do the studio work many bands couldn't play themselves.

I think the Byrds is another example that became a great band before they could all do their own work on stage and in the studio. They eventually split and went their own ways successfully.

sometimes the producers are shocked that some of those "kids" can actually play.. i seen a story were back in the 50's Gene Vincent and his band came in to do their first recording and the producer told them we are waiting for the studio guitarist to get here...when gene asked why?... the producer told him the guitar solo is pretty hard....Vincent just said oh boy....and HIS guitarist Cliff Gallop plugged in his guitar and played the hell out of the solo.....gene said...he wrote the dam thing.....needless to say the studio guitarist was told we dont need you....
