I was told once by someone who seemed knowledgeable that "Palestine" was a distortion of Phillistine (as in Goliath). The Romans called the region Palestine as an insult to the indigenous, conquered, Jews of the time. No Arabs took the name seriously, or considered themselves "Palestinians."
