The assassination of Charlie Kirk has spiked church attendance around the nation and the world like nothing has in a very long time.
Why?
The early church should give us some clues because the early church was hunted down relentlessly, being thrown to the lions and other various methods of execution for professing their faith, but the more they were oppressed, the faster they seemed to spread.
In today's church, I see many churches hiding from the world rather than engaging with it, like we saw with the early church. Covid was a prime example as many churches around the world closed, being deemed nonessential while people crowded into their local Wal Mart which was deemed "essential". The problem is, many churches have not recovered with attendance since that time. I mean, if church is not essential, why go? The church has a rich history in stepping up during Pandemics and Epidemics, and engaging society despite the dangers to their health. And society really was desperate for the church to address such issues as economic hardships and loneliness from mandated isolation dictated by the state. My guess is that there were far more deaths from the effects of closing down the economy and society than there were from Covid itself, but we will never know the real truth about it.
And I have to say, some churches did not even mention the Charlie Kirk assassination in the pulpit while the world was on fire about it. These same churches also never seem to talk about controversial positions such as abortion or the whole gender insanity. These people are either scared of the push back for talking about such issues, or they simply don't care. Either way, that is a danger sign as the church is required to deal with such issues and take a stance on them.
Historically, the Catholic church failed to come out publicly against the Holocaust. But had they done so, we all know what would have happened. They would have taken all the clergy along with the Pope and shot them. Then they would have looted the Vatican. But what a testimony that would have been for Christ. Had they done so, they probably would have spread Catholicism far greater than what it is today.
Having said all that, the world is on fire, yet the church is hiding and not addressing it. Such a church cannot and will not survive. Either churches need to engage society like Charlie did, or they will die like Charlie did. And if the world is not trying to throw the church to the lions for doing so and like they did to prophets in the OT and Christ and his disciples, something is terribly wrong.
As Jesus said, if they hated me, they will hate you and do to you what they do to me.
