In a Republic, actually
‘During a segment on HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” in August, activist Christopher Rufo astonished the studio audience when he said the Watergate scandal that toppled President Richard Nixon “was a setup from start to finish.” The crowd hooted. Maher retorted that there were plenty of “smoking guns” showing the late president’s guilt. But Rufo insisted that there were federal agencies that had had illegal backdoor meetings and that there was a judge who was “out to get Nixon.” Maher muttered, “Oh, geez,” to which Rufo replied with a grin and a prediction: “Nixon vindication by 2035.”

The Watergate scandal has long been viewed as a defining moment in presidential corruption and accountability, prompting a series of government transparency reforms and influencing generations of journalists. It became a shorthand comparison for political scandal and lent the omnipresent “-gate” suffix to many that followed.

But those lessons are now being flipped by some of the most influential right-wing figures, including people known to have President Donald Trump’s ear, who insist that Watergate was actually an underhanded scheme by the “deep state” and the press to take down a popular Republican president.

Watergate has often been invoked in comparison to Trump’s scandals, in both his first and current term. Many people — from historians to former Nixon officials — argue that were Watergate to happen in today’s media landscape, with the influence of conservative outlets and in particular Fox News, Nixon most likely would have survived it.’

Trump’s crimes and corruption are worse than Watergate.

But in today’s media landscape, with the influence of conservative outlets and in particular Fox News, Trump will in fact survived it.

Watergate was the triumph of democracy, the Constitution, and the rule of law over a criminal and corrupt Republican president.

Today a criminal and corrupt Republican president has triumphed over democracy, the Constitution, and the rule of law.

Tricky Dick, turned out to be a piece of sht, by his own work. I can say that, as I voted for him in1972, but the alternative was McGovern, so what choice did I have. The only upside, was he stopped the draft for Vietnam, when my lottery number was 42 out of 365, right before I graduated.

McGovern was the better choice. That election was an example of voters making a mistake.

I have lived all of my life in and/or around Washington. As a young child at the time of Watergate and shortly thereafter, it was like Nixon and the conspirators were pariahs damned for hell. BUT, as I matured, I became wise to Watergate was simply a botch of the kind of shit Democrats do all of the time….. they blatantly spy on private citizens and will weaponize the government and the courts to attack and achieve their objectives; in some case, pardoning radicals who shot at and bombed the Capitol: “Any means possible”.

Back to Watergate, I had the opportunity to meet G. Gordon Liddy a couple of times in my life. It was an honor.

The worst thing Nixon did was lean into his social liberalism and create the Environmental Protection Agency to appease you people yet all that did was give radicals another tool to weaponize when they are in power.

Nixon was a giant in comparison to the shamelessly corrupt fuckwit demoncrats since the '90s.

Lest we fail to mention that Watergate was a psyop and he was framed.

Prove it.

Sorry, if you are suffering from cleaner air and streams. Maybe you can find a way to live with it.

Nixon was a political moderate. Many thing accomplished during his Administration were with the support of liberal Republicans.

This is one of the things that made him a good President.

Watergate was the first Democrat "manufactured crisis". It was politicians spying on politicians. Period. Who cares? Nixon's actions to coverup what happened at Watergate and the efforts of the Washington Post to create the appearance of some vast conspiracy gave the Democrats what they needed to blow it up it a National scandal. The Democrats have been using WAPO, the NY Times and TV media to manufacture crisis after crisis ever since.

Then your side needs to stop demonizing him. He was very much a liberal; arguably, moreso than Kennedy and Johnson.

Nixon was a mixed bag. He actually was great in many ways but Watergate stained his legacy. However, he did recover some years later after Watergate. But, that doesn't change the history books.
