While this appears to be humorous it is far too close to the truth.
If one takes the time to read up on the original colonists, one will learn that many were "lay abouts" who did not believe it was their station to toil with their hands. They expected to gamble or play games and live off what the other hard-working newscomers did.

The first English speaking settlers where religious cealots from Southern Scotland and northern England who had fled Britain after Cromwell had been deposed.

So most of them were ******* zealots and fanatics who burned witches and lynched jews.

Which probably only started to change after the failed Jacobite Rebellion and the 7 years war when more catholics and moderate protestants arrived from other corners of Europe.
