The Canadian elite and the Creepy Ones who they accept to do the dirty work of violating citizens rights believed that we were somehow going to benefit by spreading anti-Americanism. Some spoke loudly about how quickly they would cut off U.S energy (as if Ontario doesn't profit from a customer), others placed ads on NHL radio shows telling Canadians to "shop at home" and other weird passive-aggressive patriotic chants when citizens are broke. Then still, media promoted this idea that America was going to suffer when Canadians didn't remain tourists in the U.S (yes, some U.S overzealous border agents have hurt the U.S tourism economy).
Well, Americans are now avoiding coming to Canada and across the board it is hurting us, big time.
Let me run Canada for five years and I would do so objectively in a manner that would bring Canada back. I think the answers are not difficult, the problem is the will power and courage to stand up to special interests. If I can't make Canada an economic power house while situated beside the greatest consumer market in the world, than I shouldn't be running a lemonade stand.
