I spent three of the longest hours in history last night at a 2nd grade talent show. Yikes. I mean, the kids were adorable and very brave, but yikes. Some of my wife's friends were there (some of their kids performed), so there was much chatting afterwards. I couldn't get at the beer fast enough when we finally got home.

Little kids really suck at singing

It is not cute, it is agony

It's quite important to encourage kids to pursue their talents at a young age.

The one I hated was Kindergarten Graduation
What is worth celebrating in completing Kindergarten?

"Talent" is an interesting phenomenon. As a boy, I have a lifetime of observation in my fave sports, and it is my considered conclusion that parenting and coaching have a great deal of impact on the relative success of kids - up to a point. Kids with little real talent can be "stars" in grade school and the first couple years of HS, but at that point talent takes over. The well-coached kids are superseded by the kids with superior size, speed, strength, quickness, optimal hand-eye coordination, and so on.

I suspect the same principle applies in other sports and in music, academics, and maybe even life.

This is one reason why I pay little attention to talent shows, kid tournaments, and things of that nature, when it is likely that the kids having the greatest success are merely the ones whose parents can afford to pay for coaches, mentors, summer camps and so on.
