Unbelievably, there are a number of posters here who have attempted to excuse slavery as a desirable, comfortable lifestyle as compared to the challenges of freedom. The real motivation for such absurd reasoning is only too plain.
Obviously not every slave was whipped and beaten every day, but it remains an inescapable truth that slavery is an offense against human dignity and the human spirit. Who here would choose for themselves even the most comfortable life as a slave over the most difficult and impoverished life as a free man? I find it hard to believe any American would make that choice.
