I have absolutely no idea how this movie is critiqued well.
It is so bad. The actor who portrays Superman, David Corenswet, can't act. Clearly got the role because of his looks and only his looks. He is terrible.
We lasted 28 minutes until one of the more dumber scenes done so poorly we just gave up. God this movie is bad.
This is one of those rare movies, where the ratings are solid. But I am sitting here - in all honesty having no idea how that is possible.

Yeah, it doesn't suck, but it's not good.

Henry Cavill was the perfect Superman.

James Gunn blew it by not bringing him back and has possibly torpedoed the DCU reboot with this tripe. I speak as one who watched the whole movie. The best part was the AI/CGI dog. And the end credits.

The scene that made me shut it off was where Lex Luther, a giant corporate CEO, releases the clip of his parents saying Superman is here to destroy the earth - and every single person bought it. Despite years and years of Superman doing good, saving lives etc. etc. - and everyone turns on him over a single video that was so clearly edited.
This movie demands you to swallow stupid moments like that.
It is lazy writing that can't come up with a compelling reason why everyone would turn on him, so they shoot this 1 minute scene just to get it out of the way, and that pretty much sums up the first half hour. I can't imagine the movie suddenly got great after that

the movie was considered one of the better Superman movies by the fans a 95% approval 85% by critics....

its a comic book story.....things are pretty simple sometimes in the comics....

Superman is metaphor for America and the Hollywood woke killed it with this movie.

Yes, Superman is frequently interpreted as a metaphor for America, particularly as an immigrant story symbolizing the nation's ideals of truth, justice, and the "American Way" of kindness and altruism, as well as its historical role as a welcoming nation built by immigrants. The character's origin as an alien who becomes a patriotic citizen embodying these principles resonates with the concept of the ideal immigrant, though this symbolism can also be interpreted politically and has sometimes sparked controversy.

Superman as an Immigrant Metaphor
  • An immigrant story:
Superman, a refugee from another planet, is a powerful allegory for the immigrant experience in America, arriving from other places to a new culture.

  • Embracing the American Way:
He embraces and protects the host culture, embodying the ideal immigrant who loves and contributes to their new home.

  • A symbol of hope and potential:
The character represents the idealistic immigrant and the potential for great things to come from diverse backgrounds.
Symbolism of American Ideals
  • Truth, justice, and kindness:
Superman stands for fundamental human kindness and the American ideals of truth and justice.

  • Altruism and hope:
His feats and dedication to helping others symbolize America's altruistic potential and aspirations for a better society.

  • The American Dream:
His story aligns with the idea that one can start a new life in America and make the world a better place.
Political and Cultural Interpretations
  • Created by immigrants:
The character was created by Jewish immigrants in the early 20th century, further solidifying the immigrant connection in his mythos.

  • Reflecting American realities:
Superman can serve as a mirror reflecting both the aspirational ideals and the sometimes-flawed realities of the United States.

  • Source of controversy:
The interpretation of Superman as an immigrant can be politically charged, sometimes leading to backlash and disagreements over the character's meaning and purpose.

I think they turned Lois Lane into a pain in the ass.
I thought the new guy made a great Superman.
I didn't understand Jimmy Olsen's function tho.

As soon as you sit down to watch a superhero movie you are suspending reality
But it needs to be believable. That is the entirety of good film making.
I don't know why I have to explain this so much.
In Star Wars, if they made Darth Vader wear a hot pink costume with purple polka dots - gee, that might affect believability - or made his voice sound like Mickey Mouse.
It is that simple.
The quality of a movie is how easy it is to suspend reality.

Modern people believe it when they are told by mass media that something is bad or good. Deep State media runs the planet...or tries to anyway.

"Shitty movie GOOD"
"Orange man BAD."

My 40 year old son and my wife love these movies.
I burnt out on them a long time ago.
Some like Guardians of the Galaxy or Ant Man, I can tolerate because they have a good soundtrack and don’t take themselves seriously. But most are just plain stupid

The dog was OK...I guess.

Pretty much sucked otherwise.
My problem is I expect Superman to be Superman.
He got the snot beat out of him the whole movie.

I liked Lois Lane though

I thought Ant Man was just stupid, pretty sure I didn't finish that one either.
Guardians of the Galaxy? Now that is different, I liked those. The humor was pretty good, and the characters were done well. Dumb? Yes, but entertaining.
This Superman is dumb 4.0 and so poorly written that I cannot enjoy it.
