We need to pray for the people of Taiwan and China. Super Typhoon Meranti is reported in news story to stretch from southern Japan to the southern Philippines. Within 36 hours the storm went from a category 1 to category 5. Taiwan was already hit by this Super Typhoon and it is hitting China right now.
TYPHOON Meranti lashed Taiwan with its biggest storm in 21 years last night before striking mainland China, which issued a red alert for waves as the storm bore down.
Violent winds of up to 370 kilometres per hour and torrential rain brought parts of eastern and southern Taiwan to a standstill as Meranti skirted past the island’s southern tip, where Hengchun’s observation station recorded the strongest gusts in its 120-year history, according to Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau.
Meranti made landfall in China early Thursday near Xiamen in Fujian Province, with gusts of up to 280km/h, according to CNN meteorologists. Heavy rainfall, flash flooding and dangerous winds will continue for the next 48 hours, with possible mudslides in eastern China.
Meranti has been downgraded from a super typhoon to typhoon status — the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center said late Wednesday
Residents were told to stay indoors and ships off the coast of China were ordered to head back to harbour as monster waves crashed into the coastline and authorities issued the highest warning for high ocean waves.
“It is the strongest typhoon to hit Taiwan in 21 years in terms of maximum sustained wind near the centre,” said forecaster Hsieh Pei-yun.
