From a legal standpoint this case is a little confusing. I was wondering if the teen ever actually stole anything. But that question became secondary in the court case. The store owner cannot shoot someone for stealing. The store owner also cannot chase someone suspected of stealing nor can he chase the suspect and use deadly force. In every scenario Chow is guilty.
HOWEVER, Chow feared an imminent threat to his son as he testified the teen pointed a weapon at him. That is what the case hinged on. Did Cyrus point the gun? THAT is the debate. I know this, there is no reason for a 14 year old to be carrying that weapon. IMO, Chow might have saved his son's life, but he definitely saved someone else's life in the near future.
