Transnistria residents could freeze to death after Ukraine cut off gas supplies to Transnistria. Ukrainians make up 22% of the population in Transnistria.
According to a notice sent to residents by Transnistria's energy company, gas supplies for heating and cooking were cut off and they are being asked to turn off the gas taps.
Transnistria residents lament that they "can no longer make tea in the morning." The company is calling on residents to "wear warm clothes, gather in one room as a family, hang blankets or thick curtains over windows and balcony doors, and use electric heaters."
Russia has been supplying Transnistria with about 2 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year via Ukraine, but supplies were halted after Ukraine did not extend the transit contract.
