No, but I worked in the big money construction industry, and was well aware of his reputation. I worked next door to Trump Tower, Toronto, and one of my poker buddies worked on that building. He said the Saudi's signed the checks on that one.

60 Minutes did a whole segment on the people Trump stiffed in Atlantic City. How he'd pick out these high end smaller contractors and offer them a chance to get into the "big leagues" with him. It was one of his scams using the financial metrics of "15% construction holdbacks" to screw over small suppliers.

Subtrades make progress billings for their work, and 15% of the amount of each invoice is held back until the project is certified. The generally accepted profit margin in construction is 15%. So all of the profit for these small businesses trying to get into the big leagues is tied up in that holdback, which they may not see for two years. The owners are borrowing money and taking out mortgages waiting on that holdback, using the payments received to pay for materials and their workers.

After the project is certified and they present the final bills, Trump starts claiming their work was substandard, and refuses to pay. One of our big contractors got stiffed for a final bill once. We suggested he sue, but it was only $40,000 and he said his time was better and more profitably spent doing work for paying customers, than it was chasing this guy through the courts for the next two years. Trump make every one of these guys chase him through the courts, and he'd end up paying them 25 cents on the dollar, and then laugh in their faces.

According to 60 Minutes, one guy committed suicide. There were bankruptcies, as a result. Pretty sick stuff. Trump bragged about how much money he made off his bankruptcies.

Trump wasn't competition for anyone I worked for. Trump as a builder was really small potatoes. The people my firm worked for were far bigger than Trump.

It took Trump 7 years to break ground in Toronto - most projects take 2 years from start to ground breaking. And then the place went bankrupt in a few years after it opened. Another Trump success story.
