I don't consider Stalin, Hitler, Mao et al to have any real ideological principles; they were just sociopaths who gathered a lot of other sociopaths around them and used Nazism and Communism as very useful window dressing and lots of useful idiots bought into it, and still do today, as in the current two party 'good cop bad cop' game in the U.S..
As for Russians, they have always been nationalists first, other 'isms' second or even 3rd and 4th throughout their history; their strategic position has always demanded expansionism and imperialism just to survive among hostile neighbors, and merely declaring itself a Marxist state didn't change a thing in their makeup and ingrained reflexes. I actually respect them for their patriotism, even if their govt. usually sucks and they are misguided as to what the current global situation is and they are they their own worst enemy much of the time; too much bullying and corruption.
